Good morning! (Or afternoon, or whatever it is wherever you are)
I'm so so excited because there is only one day left until Spring had officially sprung here in Australia! Winter seemed to fly by and I can't wait for the world down here to warm up again. In celebration of the warm weather I thought I'd show you a super simple and fun DIY. Summer sandals (also known as soleless sandals)!
I remember when my sister and I were really little my mum taught us both how to make these sandals and we were absolutely enthralled by them. Back then we made them out of coloured wool and would parade around in them all day. Now that I'm older, slightly more creative and still enthralled with them I love coming up with a bunch of different designs to make, so today I thought I'd teach you how to make some for yourself! (For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere going into winter, sorry!)
What you need:
- Scissors
- Embroidery Thread
- Beads/any other embellishments you want!
What to do:
1. Making these sandals is so super easy, and the first thing you need to do is cut quite a long piece of thread in any colour you want. You should have at least three pieces of thread, but you can also have as many more than that as you want.
2. Fold the threads in half and tie them into a loop in the center. This loop shouldn’t be too big nor too small, simply enough to fit over your second toe.
3. Once you’ve done that you can start plaiting your threads together! If you don’t want to plait you can also add a row of beads, flowers, feathers, anything at all. For mine though, I went with plaiting and adding beads every now and then.
4. Keep on plaiting or adding more embellishments until it is long enough to reach from your toe down to a few centimetres before your ankle. Once you have the perfect length tie it off with a knot and then split the threads into two even halves.
5. Start plaiting the two new sections you’ve just made separately as these are what is going to be the “straps” of your sandal. Once again you can add more beads or anything else, but for this one I just went with a simple plait. Keep plaiting until your straps are a suitable length and then tie them off.
6. You’re done! Well, almost. Now you need to go and make your second sandal! Or you can also make something similar to wear on your hand. The design possibilities are endless, go and add anything you little creative heart desires.
These "sandals" are seriously addictive to make, and I've quite the collection. Once you start you simple can't stop!
Let me know if you make some for yourself!
Now I'm off to go and wait for Spring to arrive!
