The Constellation Catalogue || #7 Capricornus

Hello everyone! I hope you've had an absolutely wonderful Christmas and are starting to get super duper excited for the New Year! (I know I am, I'm not afraid to say I get more excited for New Year's than for Christmas.)

Let's be honest here, Capricornus is one of those constellations that looks nothing like it's namesake. I'd recommend looking at one of those pictures that shows and actual drawing of what the constellation is alongside the stars, they're super helpful.

Despite that, here's this month's constellation Capricornus!

Don't forget that you can download a copy of this sheet here and find a star map for your location here

2016 Resolutions

How on earth it's already been a year since I was writing my 2015 resolutions post is beyond me. Looking back at it I think I managed to do quite well on most of my resolutions. I started my Etsy which now takes up a great chunk of my days, I branched out and took the plunge to try new things and I now finish the year with quite a different mindset then when I started it.

2015 is almost over though, so it's time to leave this road to turn onto another. It's the perfect opportunity to look ahead and work out which direction I want to travel in. Here's a peek of where I hope to be this time next year.

1. One technology free day each week
Completely self explanatory. I also just realised that I've had some sort of technology-related resolution on my list since 2013. Let's make it so I don't need to make one next year okay? Okay.

2. Actively seek inspiration
This is a very general resolution for a lot of different topics. I want to read more books, discover more art, watch more documentaries and find more likeminded people to find inspiration from. No more endless scrolling through tumblr hoping that someone's reblogged some inspiration onto my dashboard. Instead I'm going to get up and go find it in as many different places in as many different ways by as many different people as I can.

3. Write something everyday
Again this is pretty self explanatory. I've gotten myself a 365 notebook (although next year has 366 days!) and I want to use it every day. I want to start trying different things with my writing/poetry so I think a notebook where no-one but me will ever see my work is the perfect place to start. This resolution will be hard to maintain I know, but I can try!

4. Create. Create. Create!
I love this blog space because it always gets me to think of creative ways to set out my posts or present something. But I still think I can do more. I always see the work other people have done and it's so amazing that I'm left wishing I could draw or paint or a number of other things. Maybe that's okay, but I do want to try more creative things more often instead of once in a while.

5. Live more consciously
Educate myself on topics that usually get swept under the rug. Be mindful of my actions and their consequences. Be aware of my importance and insignificance simultaneously and act accordingly. I also want to try to spend less and realise that everything I own is enough. This means only buying one book a month (I have a book buying problem) and making better use of the library. Also shopping only at thrift stores (I generally do this already although it's good to have a set rule to stick by!)

6. Be
Perhaps a bit of a cryptic one. But be happy, be sad, be whatever I'm feeling in a moment without judgment or wishing that what it is wasn't what it is. Be wherever I am whenever I am and be there completely.

I think overall my resolutions fall under the title of "Be Authentic", cut back all of the haze of consumerism and distraction we live behind and remember what real living is.

I'd love to hear some of your resolutions!

DIY || 2016 Planner (Template Download)

Hi all! Are you getting excited for 2016? I am pumped for the new year, I absolutely cannot wait for a fresh start and that feeling of being limitless that a new year brings.

If you were around the blog this time last year you would've seen me upload a template for my 2015 planner. That post is still one of my most popular so I thought I would do an updated version since so many people liked it last year. Behold, the 2016 planner:

I honestly loved the planner the first time around so much so there's very minimal changes to it for 2016. The only things changed being the dates, moon phases. fonts, and there's some new quotes in there too!

It contains things like:
- Year view calendar
- 2 spaces to write New Year's resolutions (2016 at the front and 2017 at the back)
- "Seasonal Goals" pages: One page at the beginning of each season with a space to write goals (and a nice inspirational quote!)
- Monthly view calendar at the beginning of each month
- To Do List at the top of each week
- 4 pages for notes (2 in the middle and 2 at the back)
- Moon phases
- A minimalistic design for your own decorating

So what's that I hear you say? You'd like one too? No worries!

You can download the template for the 2016 planner here

You'll notice that on the template it will look as though the pages are all out of order. This is because you will want to set your printer so it prints four pages to one sheet of paper (two "pages" on the front of the paper and two on the back). Then you'll fold the paper in half and put them into sections, making sure all the page numbers are in order.

In an attempt to walk you through the process of making a planner this year I've created a little instructional video! Here it is:

The type of binding is called coptic stitch, so if you have trouble understanding my instructions you should be able to find plenty of others online.

Please let me know if you think you'll make a copy for yourself (or as a gift!) and what you think of it.

I hope you're all having a wonderful week,

Musings || Do Not Be Afraid of Fear

PS. This is completely irrelevant to this post but too sweet not to share: for the past few days when I've opened my front door to go outside there's been a little spider that scurries down in between the planks of my walkway when it sees/senses me there. At first I thought it was funny that it would do the exact same thing on two consecutive days but since then whenever I walk past my front door I peek out the window and there it is, the little spider just sitting in front of my door as though it's just knocked and is waiting to be let in. It's been about a week now, and it does it every day. Make of it what you will, but I've grown quite fond of this little spider friend who seems to always be waiting for something.

Playlist || Summer Sunsets

It's SUMMER! (If you're in the southern hemisphere that is, sorry Northern friends). Queensland definitely didn't wait long to turn the heating up and I've already melted a few times this month. Here's 10 songs that I'm loving this summer, perfect for long car trips or simply watching the light turn golden of an afternoon.

PS. How cool is the paper I did the typewriting on? It's translucent yet patterned, so cool!

Since giving myself the permission to post whatever it is I want I've been loving creating blog posts (I currently have 10 scheduled, what!). I'm going to have heaps of time to work on new posts since I'm on holidays now so feel free to let me know what kind of posts you like and want to see more of!

Outfit || December: Pinecone Pinafore

Do you know what makes me sad? The great big title of CHRISTMAS FABRIC that ensures you'll feel self conscious wearing anything made from it at any time that's not the one week around christmas where it's acceptable to do so. This is me making a stand against such a horrible fate for a fabric because pinecones were just nature before you came and slapped a "Christmas" sticker on it thankyou very much.

Now that's out of the way, it felt so good to get back in my sewing room and spend an entire day just working on something new to wear. My wardrobe is getting to the point where half of it is homemade and the other half is from thrift stores and that makes me very happy. The most expensive item in this outfit is my shoes and they were $15.

There's something about pinafores that makes me very happy, maybe it's the childishness of them, or the plethora of different shirts and styles you can wear with them. Either way this is the second one I've made, the last one being this one. (Oh my actual goodness as I'm writing this post it's been exactly 2 years to the day since my last pinafore post. What is this? Magic?)

Anyway, making this pinafore was a heap of fun, my favourite part of the whole thing being the tiny embroidery on the pocket. You can catch me wearing this whenever because I will not bow to the Christmas fabric stigma.

x Erin.

PS. Here's a quick little video I made while I was making my pinafore to show a bit of my process.

Little Moments

You might remember that at the beginning of the year I did a post about the jar of "magic" I made. A place to keep little notes of things that made me smile throughout the year. It sits up on my dressing table ready for me to add to it whenever I want.

With the year coming to a close I'm emptying out all the slips of paper to keep in some other safe place so my jar can be empty and ready for another year of little moments. I'd really recommend keeping a similar jar for yourself, that way you can pull a piece of paper out whenever you're feeling down and remind yourself that things always get brighter. Besides, what better time to start a new habit than with a brand new year just a few weeks away?

Let me know some of your favourite little moments,

A Story About Stories

She awoke at 3am. She knew that was the time because the neon green light of her alarm clock burned the numbers into her vision. Outside the window the full moon had begun its sluggish descent toward the horizon, casting long shadows across her back garden that seemed to move independently from the objects which created them. The world was quiet and so was her mind; still caught in that in between stage of sleeping and waking, where dreams dance in amongst reality. She pulled back the covers and shivered in the crisp air of the night. Swinging her feet to the floor, she tip-toed down the stairs and out the back door. No torch was needed, it was a full moon after all.

The outside world was just as quiet as it had seemed from her room; like even the creatures of the night had drifted into a slumber, making the crack of a stick breaking behind her echo louder than it would have otherwise. She spun around and her eyes rested on a small box nestled in the grass, its intricate carvings and smooth wooden edges made a stark contrast to the crooked world around it.

Bending down she found it unlocked, and one peek beneath the lid revealed rows of jars of different shapes and sizes. They were all illuminated by the contents they held within themselves. She gasped,

Stories.

"Stories," came a voice from the shadows, "I see you have found my collection of them."
"These are all yours?" She asked incredulously, "But you must've lived a hundred lifetimes to collect so many of your own."
The voice in the shadows chuckled, or perhaps it was the shadows themselves, she couldn't see anyone there at all.
"I have had only a few more trips around the sun than you, but nevertheless these stories are all mine."

Her head whirling she sat back on the grass in disbelief. She'd heard of stories before, heard friends share one of their own; tales of foreign lands and unimaginable adventure. Sometimes she sat by herself and watched people passing by, imagining what it would be like to have even one jar-full of story to call hers. But she was herself, she was small and sometimes scared of the world and stories didn't come knocking on the doors of girls like her.

She jolted out of her reverie when the shadows spoke again; "I can teach you how to catch some if you wish."
"I don't think there's any to be caught," she replied with a sigh, "I'm always watching the lives of everyone as they go about collecting stories of their own, just incase I can learn from them you see. I read books crammed full with the stories of others. I hear about them all the time, on the news and in the paper. Stories, stories, stories everywhere and yet not one for me."
The shadows chuckled again. It was an odd sort of chuckle, if you listened close enough it sounded strangely like the rustle of leaves.
"You don't see do you? There is a story around you right now."

She looked around, seeing nothing but the moonlight against the trees.
"Perhaps you cannot see it yet, but it is there and it is waiting for you to recognise it. The thing with stories is that the more you blind yourself with those of others the harder it is to see your own. Each time you crave someone else's yours shrinks a little, thinking that perhaps it isn't enough for you." The voice continued, "You stand with your jar open and wait, you wait and wait and stories come in and out of your jar but you don't see them. You're waiting for something bigger, something better, something you think can compete with everyone else whilst hundreds of stories swirl around you."

"But," she whispered, not wanting to scare the story away, "how do I catch them?"
"It's simple," the shadows replied, "you stop looking to everyone else for permission to close the jar."

The Constellation Catalogue || #6 Sagittarius

Two constellations in one month? Yeah that's right. I've decided to swap around the days when I post certain things so to get everything in sync we have another constellation for November! (From now on you'll get a new constellation on the fourth Sunday of every month).
Anyway, too much talking not enough stargazing. Here is Sagittarius!

Dear Future Me || A Reply To My 18 Year Old Self

When I was 18 I discovered a website called futureme.org. There you can write letters that will be delivered to your email at whatever point in the future you specify. You can't go back and read the letters once they're saved, so it's a lovely surprise when one appears in your inbox. Tonight I was just about to head off to bed when I checked my email one last time and discovered a letter from myself exactly two years ago today along with a photo. It struck me suddenly how much I'd changed without knowing, I think 2013 me would be proud. Here is her letter for me and my letter back to her. Tomorrow I'll be writing another one to send another 2 years into the future.

Dear 18 year old me,
I will not lie to you and say that life has sorted itself out because it hasn't, but I've learnt with time that that is the entire point of life; to be constantly thrown from one situation to the next. There is nothing more detrimental to growth than certainty.

Congratulations on making it through that horrible year of university, you've not stepped foot in a university classroom since. Sometimes I still fret over whether dropping out was the right decision, but then I remind myself that I can always go back if I find myself with something I am truly passionate about. I really truly am happy with what I'm doing right now, although perhaps a "real" job on the side will be needed sometime in the near future. I'll cross that bridge when I'm already halfway over it and suddenly realise it's not completed.

You'll be happy to hear that I have gone somewhere new recently! I just came back from almost 3 months in the USA teaching at a summer camp. I also travelled by myself too, can you believe it? I know if I'd known that when I was your age my heart would be in my throat with nerves. That's the difference between us 18 year old me, there's a bravery and self assuredness in my bones that wasn't there two years ago.

I've also found new friends, some even that I hope to have for life. I can probably still count them on one hand, but now it's a choice more than something that simply happened. I choose to surround myself with people who inspire me and are carving their own way in this world. Besides, the quality of your relationships aren't defined by how many you have.

This next part of your letter to me made me laugh at your naivety. Oh 2013 me, would you believe me if I told you I'd handwritten almost 350 letters to people all across the world in the last one and a half years alone? I currently have a stack still left to write. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by it, but your joy at writing letters for the sake of making others happy puts it all in perspective. You have a best friend too (she lives on the other side of the world), you write her letters every month and you even got to stay with her when you were in the US. In your time though, you're not going to know of her existence for another few months. It'll happen though, and then the world will get much brighter.

I don't know how to break this to you but I still don't have my license. We won't talk about it okay?

I'm not 100% happy and healthy 18 year old me, and you aren't either are you? But I trust myself and I believe in myself, and even when life is horrible I still love myself. I believe the person I want to be is still up ahead, maybe we can go and find her together.

Love from your slightly older 20 year old self.

Playlist || Reclaim Your Mind

Since beginning to actively search them out I've found myself with a playlist over three hours long of eye opening speeches by philosophers and other important figures. I thought I would share just a small snippet of them with you, interwoven with songs that so beautifully share opinions on the big issues.

I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any other artist you recommend me listening to!

Rust

It's 6pm and the sky is the colour I imagine it would be if today was the last day on earth; an omnipresent orange hue that pervades everything it touches. If I close my eyes it's almost too easy to imagine the world is ending. From somewhere comes the lingering smell of smoke. It's not raining, but every now and then there is a grumble of thunder overhead. I stand barefoot in the middle of my street and soak up this otherworldly feeling, like something sinister is brewing.

I want to go back inside to escape whatever it is that is clawing at my chest, but inside is filled with the sounds of a television reporting on yet more destruction; this time a heartless terrorism that is unfolding in France.

My heart is always breaking for everyone, little pieces chipped away by the unfairness of the world. I cannot remember the last time it broke for me. It's like D.H Lawrence said; "I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself." Perhaps not for itself, but surely even the wildest of things cannot help but weep for the members of its pack that howl in pain, broken down by the evil of the world.

Outfit || November

Some real talk: There is a tent smack bang in the middle of my backyard which has prevented me from using the usual nature-y background which seems to have become standard for my outfit posts. So instead I was forced to find somewhere else. A good thing too, because I love how these photos turned out! (Yes, crinkled bedsheet and everything. It wouldn't be me if it was too professional would it!)

Now, I am obsessed with this top. I'm not sure what the person who donated it to the thrift shop was thinking, but thankyou oh kind stranger because I managed to grab it for $6 and I am endlessly in love with it. The puffy sleeves! The cutout flowers! This shirt was just calling my name and now I'm going to try and include it in as many outfits as possible.

As for the skirt, it's just a simple summer skirt that I made the other day out of a piece of fabric I loved so much that I had never used it (I'm sure you know what I mean.) It wasn't until I was editing these photos that I realised it matches my anklet!

On another note I've only just recently realised how much I utterly love winged eyeliner. It makes me feel like a fairy and we all know that's the number one way I want to feel 100% of the time. I can't say I've quite mastered it yet!

Apologies for the long paragraph. Please feel free to give me every single idea you have of how to style this shirt!

The Constellation Catalogue || #5: Scorpius

This month's constellation is one of my favourites. Right up there with Orion as the easiest to find in the sky, Scorpius is another one of those lucky few who actually look like the thing their name suggests. This constellation also has a pretty cool mythology too, making it super interesting to learn about!

Changes

It's hard to know where to begin this story, if it indeed has a point that I can mark as a definite beginning. It seems to have been something that I was simultaneously aware of and that crept up on me. Maybe the beginning was when I left school, when I deleted my facebook, or when I quit university. Maybe it was that part of 2014 where I tried to be more mindful. Whatever it was, it flicked a switch in me and to explain it I will start at the most recent beginning: my trip to the USA. Before this point I'd never travelled alone before, and I'd seen a lot less of the world than I would've liked. So I jumped on a plane not knowing what lessons I would learn.

What struck me most when I got to the summer camp I was working at was the quick connections I made with the other counsellors. We had all been thrown in an unknown situation together and because of this everyone reached out for someone to connect with. Being severely limited on social media we were forced to live in the moment; something that made me realise I was living an adventure I'd so often lusted after on instagram and tumblr. If internet access had been more readily available I'm not sure I would've realised at all.

I first noticed a real change when we went to visit New York City on our day off. I remember standing in Times Square looking up at advertisement after advertisement and feeling sick. Maybe it was all the stimulus attacking my senses at once, but I think it was more than that. I was beginning to understand the influence that massive corporations and advertisers have on our sense of self, our sense of worth. I felt like an outsider trying to understand the world but I just couldn't make sense of it. People were commenting on how amazing the place was but the only thought in my mind was that I had never seen something so ugly in my life.

Towards the end of my time at camp the best thing happened to me. I lost my phone. I no longer had an excuse to be looking down. Once camp was over and I started travelling alone I got a new one for safety reasons, but still held onto how unencumbered I felt during those few weeks when I had nothing. It made me lift my eyes up more. I made conversation with strangers. I sat alone in public without any distractions that trick people into thinking I wasn't really alone. I smiled to myself and plucked up the courage to hand out compliments like they were a form of currency.

I realised social media was anything but social and the more I became aware of this the more frustrated I became at myself and the world in general for allowing ourselves to be swept up in this false illusion of authenticity. Of thinking we're living a real life when it is always in the back of our minds which photo would look good on instagram, which story would most impress the people that we probably don't even care all that much about. While we ponder these questions we forget that the best camera we have is our own eyes and the most important person to share a moment with is ourselves.

I came home and was partially sucked back into a life of likes and carefully constructed online personalities. But not completely. My mind had grown too much to fit back inside the confines of my life at home, and instead I needed to build a new place for it to rest.

I got rid of bags on bags of possessions, still feeling like I owned too much "stuff" that distracted me from (heaven forbid) having to take a long hard look at my life and realise it wasn't the kind I wanted.
My phone stopped working and I went back to one I can only use for calls and text. I stopped eating meat. I started reading more books that resonated with my state of mind. For almost a month I listened to no music, pressing play only on lectures by philosophers and other inspiring humans. I was slowly bringing my conscious attention to something that had always stayed hidden at the back of my mind; this "life" I'd been living, of ego, of judgement, of the mindless consumption of media and unnecessary "need" of things, as well as projecting an image of my life online and being swept up in other's projections had to stop.
I couldn't play along with this game anymore.

So now I find myself at the present moment, ready to make changes. There is a quote about letting parts of yourself die that I understand more now:

"Kill what you don’t like. I had an old self that I killed. You can kill yourself too, but that doesn’t mean you've got to stop living"

I'm deleting my personal instagram. With my job being online I cannot remove myself from the internet completely, but I'm going to use social media only for my work. I'm going to stop letting a needless desire to consume more and more pointless things rule my life. I want to strip life back to its bare bones. I'm keeping this blog as it would be foolish to abandon something that brings me so much joy and keeps me creating. The content may change though; more in favour of long writing and thoughts in a hope of connecting deeper with the community here.

I need a whole separate posts to talk about my resolutions for next year, but until then know that I want to actively seek out more like-minded people. I want to write letters and exchange ideas on big questions. (Please let me know if there is anyone I should connect with.)

It feels so good to get it out of my mind and into words. Change is coming and it will keep coming until the day I die. That is the beauty of life.

Video || October 2015

I'll be completely honest with you, there were a lot of moments this month that I didn't film because I either forgot or didn't want to. Hence why it looks like I did nothing but stay at home all month (then again maybe that's the truth.)

My mind was a much more interesting place to live instead this month so I feel as though my up-coming writing posts are a better representation of October.

Nevertheless I hope you enjoy the video!
