The Constellation Catalogue || #6 Sagittarius

Two constellations in one month? Yeah that's right. I've decided to swap around the days when I post certain things so to get everything in sync we have another constellation for November! (From now on you'll get a new constellation on the fourth Sunday of every month).
Anyway, too much talking not enough stargazing. Here is Sagittarius!

Are any of you guys Sagittarians? Also let me know which constellations you would like me to do next!

Don't forget that you can download a copy of this sheet here and find a star map for your location here

Dear Future Me || A Reply To My 18 Year Old Self

When I was 18 I discovered a website called futureme.org. There you can write letters that will be delivered to your email at whatever point in the future you specify. You can't go back and read the letters once they're saved, so it's a lovely surprise when one appears in your inbox. Tonight I was just about to head off to bed when I checked my email one last time and discovered a letter from myself exactly two years ago today along with a photo. It struck me suddenly how much I'd changed without knowing, I think 2013 me would be proud. Here is her letter for me and my letter back to her. Tomorrow I'll be writing another one to send another 2 years into the future.

Dear 18 year old me,
I will not lie to you and say that life has sorted itself out because it hasn't, but I've learnt with time that that is the entire point of life; to be constantly thrown from one situation to the next. There is nothing more detrimental to growth than certainty.

Congratulations on making it through that horrible year of university, you've not stepped foot in a university classroom since. Sometimes I still fret over whether dropping out was the right decision, but then I remind myself that I can always go back if I find myself with something I am truly passionate about. I really truly am happy with what I'm doing right now, although perhaps a "real" job on the side will be needed sometime in the near future. I'll cross that bridge when I'm already halfway over it and suddenly realise it's not completed.

You'll be happy to hear that I have gone somewhere new recently! I just came back from almost 3 months in the USA teaching at a summer camp. I also travelled by myself too, can you believe it? I know if I'd known that when I was your age my heart would be in my throat with nerves. That's the difference between us 18 year old me, there's a bravery and self assuredness in my bones that wasn't there two years ago.

I've also found new friends, some even that I hope to have for life. I can probably still count them on one hand, but now it's a choice more than something that simply happened. I choose to surround myself with people who inspire me and are carving their own way in this world. Besides, the quality of your relationships aren't defined by how many you have.

This next part of your letter to me made me laugh at your naivety. Oh 2013 me, would you believe me if I told you I'd handwritten almost 350 letters to people all across the world in the last one and a half years alone? I currently have a stack still left to write. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by it, but your joy at writing letters for the sake of making others happy puts it all in perspective. You have a best friend too (she lives on the other side of the world), you write her letters every month and you even got to stay with her when you were in the US. In your time though, you're not going to know of her existence for another few months. It'll happen though, and then the world will get much brighter.

I don't know how to break this to you but I still don't have my license. We won't talk about it okay?

I'm not 100% happy and healthy 18 year old me, and you aren't either are you? But I trust myself and I believe in myself, and even when life is horrible I still love myself. I believe the person I want to be is still up ahead, maybe we can go and find her together.

Love from your slightly older 20 year old self.

Playlist || Reclaim Your Mind

Since beginning to actively search them out I've found myself with a playlist over three hours long of eye opening speeches by philosophers and other important figures. I thought I would share just a small snippet of them with you, interwoven with songs that so beautifully share opinions on the big issues.

I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any other artist you recommend me listening to!

Rust

It's 6pm and the sky is the colour I imagine it would be if today was the last day on earth; an omnipresent orange hue that pervades everything it touches. If I close my eyes it's almost too easy to imagine the world is ending. From somewhere comes the lingering smell of smoke. It's not raining, but every now and then there is a grumble of thunder overhead. I stand barefoot in the middle of my street and soak up this otherworldly feeling, like something sinister is brewing.

I want to go back inside to escape whatever it is that is clawing at my chest, but inside is filled with the sounds of a television reporting on yet more destruction; this time a heartless terrorism that is unfolding in France.

My heart is always breaking for everyone, little pieces chipped away by the unfairness of the world. I cannot remember the last time it broke for me. It's like D.H Lawrence said; "I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself." Perhaps not for itself, but surely even the wildest of things cannot help but weep for the members of its pack that howl in pain, broken down by the evil of the world.

Outfit || November

Some real talk: There is a tent smack bang in the middle of my backyard which has prevented me from using the usual nature-y background which seems to have become standard for my outfit posts. So instead I was forced to find somewhere else. A good thing too, because I love how these photos turned out! (Yes, crinkled bedsheet and everything. It wouldn't be me if it was too professional would it!)

Now, I am obsessed with this top. I'm not sure what the person who donated it to the thrift shop was thinking, but thankyou oh kind stranger because I managed to grab it for $6 and I am endlessly in love with it. The puffy sleeves! The cutout flowers! This shirt was just calling my name and now I'm going to try and include it in as many outfits as possible.

As for the skirt, it's just a simple summer skirt that I made the other day out of a piece of fabric I loved so much that I had never used it (I'm sure you know what I mean.) It wasn't until I was editing these photos that I realised it matches my anklet!

On another note I've only just recently realised how much I utterly love winged eyeliner. It makes me feel like a fairy and we all know that's the number one way I want to feel 100% of the time. I can't say I've quite mastered it yet!

Apologies for the long paragraph. Please feel free to give me every single idea you have of how to style this shirt!

The Constellation Catalogue || #5: Scorpius

This month's constellation is one of my favourites. Right up there with Orion as the easiest to find in the sky, Scorpius is another one of those lucky few who actually look like the thing their name suggests. This constellation also has a pretty cool mythology too, making it super interesting to learn about!

Changes

It's hard to know where to begin this story, if it indeed has a point that I can mark as a definite beginning. It seems to have been something that I was simultaneously aware of and that crept up on me. Maybe the beginning was when I left school, when I deleted my facebook, or when I quit university. Maybe it was that part of 2014 where I tried to be more mindful. Whatever it was, it flicked a switch in me and to explain it I will start at the most recent beginning: my trip to the USA. Before this point I'd never travelled alone before, and I'd seen a lot less of the world than I would've liked. So I jumped on a plane not knowing what lessons I would learn.

What struck me most when I got to the summer camp I was working at was the quick connections I made with the other counsellors. We had all been thrown in an unknown situation together and because of this everyone reached out for someone to connect with. Being severely limited on social media we were forced to live in the moment; something that made me realise I was living an adventure I'd so often lusted after on instagram and tumblr. If internet access had been more readily available I'm not sure I would've realised at all.

I first noticed a real change when we went to visit New York City on our day off. I remember standing in Times Square looking up at advertisement after advertisement and feeling sick. Maybe it was all the stimulus attacking my senses at once, but I think it was more than that. I was beginning to understand the influence that massive corporations and advertisers have on our sense of self, our sense of worth. I felt like an outsider trying to understand the world but I just couldn't make sense of it. People were commenting on how amazing the place was but the only thought in my mind was that I had never seen something so ugly in my life.

Towards the end of my time at camp the best thing happened to me. I lost my phone. I no longer had an excuse to be looking down. Once camp was over and I started travelling alone I got a new one for safety reasons, but still held onto how unencumbered I felt during those few weeks when I had nothing. It made me lift my eyes up more. I made conversation with strangers. I sat alone in public without any distractions that trick people into thinking I wasn't really alone. I smiled to myself and plucked up the courage to hand out compliments like they were a form of currency.

I realised social media was anything but social and the more I became aware of this the more frustrated I became at myself and the world in general for allowing ourselves to be swept up in this false illusion of authenticity. Of thinking we're living a real life when it is always in the back of our minds which photo would look good on instagram, which story would most impress the people that we probably don't even care all that much about. While we ponder these questions we forget that the best camera we have is our own eyes and the most important person to share a moment with is ourselves.

I came home and was partially sucked back into a life of likes and carefully constructed online personalities. But not completely. My mind had grown too much to fit back inside the confines of my life at home, and instead I needed to build a new place for it to rest.

I got rid of bags on bags of possessions, still feeling like I owned too much "stuff" that distracted me from (heaven forbid) having to take a long hard look at my life and realise it wasn't the kind I wanted.
My phone stopped working and I went back to one I can only use for calls and text. I stopped eating meat. I started reading more books that resonated with my state of mind. For almost a month I listened to no music, pressing play only on lectures by philosophers and other inspiring humans. I was slowly bringing my conscious attention to something that had always stayed hidden at the back of my mind; this "life" I'd been living, of ego, of judgement, of the mindless consumption of media and unnecessary "need" of things, as well as projecting an image of my life online and being swept up in other's projections had to stop.
I couldn't play along with this game anymore.

So now I find myself at the present moment, ready to make changes. There is a quote about letting parts of yourself die that I understand more now:

"Kill what you don’t like. I had an old self that I killed. You can kill yourself too, but that doesn’t mean you've got to stop living"

I'm deleting my personal instagram. With my job being online I cannot remove myself from the internet completely, but I'm going to use social media only for my work. I'm going to stop letting a needless desire to consume more and more pointless things rule my life. I want to strip life back to its bare bones. I'm keeping this blog as it would be foolish to abandon something that brings me so much joy and keeps me creating. The content may change though; more in favour of long writing and thoughts in a hope of connecting deeper with the community here.

I need a whole separate posts to talk about my resolutions for next year, but until then know that I want to actively seek out more like-minded people. I want to write letters and exchange ideas on big questions. (Please let me know if there is anyone I should connect with.)

It feels so good to get it out of my mind and into words. Change is coming and it will keep coming until the day I die. That is the beauty of life.

Video || October 2015

I'll be completely honest with you, there were a lot of moments this month that I didn't film because I either forgot or didn't want to. Hence why it looks like I did nothing but stay at home all month (then again maybe that's the truth.)

My mind was a much more interesting place to live instead this month so I feel as though my up-coming writing posts are a better representation of October.

Nevertheless I hope you enjoy the video!
