I can bet that at least once in your life you have probably attempted to keep a diary. Where is that diary now? Did you keep it for very long? I'm telling you to stop reading this right now and go and find it and read it, if that doesn't make you want to start keeping a diary again, I don't know what will.
I know I started a diary in grade 1 when my parents made me (something about sharing my feelings?) and that was the last I diary I ever actually completely finished. Until now, that is...
If any of you reading this were on my blog at the beginning of the year you would have seen
this New Years Resolution post, where my 6th resolution was to keep a diary for the whole year! So I'm here to let you all know that it's over halfway through the year now and I'm still going strong with my resolution! In fact, I just finished my first diary after struggling through 2011 and 2012 to even get partway through it.
I'll let you take a wild stab in the dark as to which one is my finished diary :P
That's right! I absolutely love how thick my yellow diary is and I think it's even more amazing knowing that it's completely filled with memories and days that I probably would have completely forgotten otherwise. So to finally get into the point of this post I thought I would share with you how I go about keeping a diary and why I enjoy it so much!
1. Have a set writing time: During the day everyone gets really busy so it's very likely you'll convince yourself you're too tired or don't have time if you just intend to write whenever. For me, I write just before I go to bed so it's a good way to wind down and I can just turn off the light and go straight to sleep once I'm done writing.
2. Make it pretty!: There's nothing fun about a boring old notebook. I like mine nice and colourful and feel free to stick stickers or absolutely anything on the front to make it more appealing!
3. Write like you're talking to a friend: Another reason why most people get turned off keeping a diary is that to them it just seems like it's a boring recollection of their day. If you write as though it's a friend you're more likely to write about how you feel about what happened during the day instead of just rattling off things.
4. Keep it safe: If you have curious siblings chances are that if they know you keep a diary they'll try to find and read it, and this can seriously deter people from writing about what they really want to. Make sure you put your diary somewhere safe away from prying hands and eyes!
5. Don't be afraid to scrapbook: One of the things that I like about my diary is that I have lots of little things stuck in here and there that will spark my memory to a really great day or moment. Plus, it makes your diary thicker in the end and who doesn't want that! Here's my competitor number from when I did the Color Run back in June.
That's about all the tips I have for now, but whilst it might be difficult in the beginning to continue to constantly write, after about a month it just slips into habit and honestly I really enjoy the time I set aside each night now to reflect on the day.
I'm really excited to look back one day in the future on these pages as well and just see how much I've changed, plus get a little laugh out of all the things I'm worrying about now that will just seem so pointless in the future!
So do any of you keep a diary? are you going to try it out now? let me know!
Over and out,
Erin.
