How long has it been since the last time you went outside for no reason other than to watch the stars twinkle? If you missed watching the Lyrid's meteor shower on Thursday morning then don't fear, there's always plenty of other showers to see (put May 5th in your diaries for the Eta Aquarids!). There doesn't even need to be a particular event happening for you to get out and marvel at the beauty of the universe. If you're planning on staying outside to stargaze for a long time (or are getting up at the ridiculous time of 2am to do so like yours truly...) then there are a few things that you'll need to keep you comfortable and nice and warm.
Comfort
- Picnic Blanket to lay on
- Pillow or cushion
- Blanket to keep you warm
Clothes
- Thick coat/jacket (don't underestimate how cold the early morning air can be, even when it's summer)
- Tracksuit pants (you might even want thermals underneath)
- Beanie
- Gloves
- Thick socks
- Warm boots
Other
- Camera: if yours has the ability to photograph stars
- Binoculars: even the smallest pair will allow you to see so many more stars than you can with the naked eye
- Torch: one with a red light is best, you can just put red cellophane over the top as this helps preserve your night vision!
- Phone (optional):I have a star map I use on mine to help find constellations
- Snacks
- Water (or a thermos of tea/hot chocolate if you're super prepared!)
- Ipod: Listening to just the right songs while stargazing makes the experience 10x better
If you're going to go stargazing in the early morning get everything ready the night before and put it by the door so you're not crashing around everywhere trying to find things.

As a little something extra, here's a playlist of the songs that'll make your stargazing experience surreal.
